Porsche has come up with a new personalization program for the 911 (992) that uses an innovative painting method developed in-house.
Part of the Exclusive Manufaktur division’s portfolio, it allows high-quality elements, such as individual fingerprints, to be printed onto the body parts of the sports car. Available for the bonnet at first, it’s a €7,500 ($8,134) option in Germany, where it will launch next month.

For the direct printing, whose operating principle is similar to that of an inkjet printer, the automaker has set up a ‘technology cell’ in the Zuffenhausen training center’s paint shop. It is there that the robot paints the unique design onto the hood, subsequent to the submission of the customer’s biometric data. After that, a clear coat is applied and the part gets polished to a high-gloss finish, before being reinstalled.
Customers opting for this personalization method will be in direct touch with official consultants, who will explain every step, from the submission of the fingerprint to the completion of the project. They will supervise the entire process and Porsche claims that the biometric data will be processed, so that it cannot be used for unauthorized purposes.
“Individuality is very important for Porsche customers. And no design can be more personal than your own fingerprint”, said the VP of Individualization and Classic, Alexander Fabig. “Porsche is a pioneer in personalization and has developed the direct printing method together with partners. We’re especially proud of having developed a completely new product offering based on new technologies.”
