Lotus is hard at work on developing the upcoming Evija, an all-electric hypercar that wants to rewrite the rules of the performance world and usher the British brand into a new era.

Carwow had the chance to spend some alone time with the Evija show car at the company’s new manufacturing facility in Norfolk, taking us for a detailed tour around the first battery electric Lotus hypercar.

The electric Lotus will have no less than four electric motors, one for each wheel, producing a combined 1,973 HP (2,000 PS) and 1,254 lb-ft (1,700 Nm) of torque. 0-62 mph (100 km/h) is expected to come in less than three seconds, with the 0-186 mph (300 km/h) achieved in less than 9 seconds. Top speed is expected to be over 200 mph (320 km/h).

Based on an lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque chassis that weighs just 284 lbs (129 kg), the upcoming Lotus Evija is targeting a figure of 3,704 lbs (1,680 kg), which is impressive for a car with a heavy lithium-ion battery pack.

Speaking of batteries, the Lotus Evija will feature a 70 kWh unit mounted in the middle behind the cabin that will give it a driving range of around 250 miles (400 km). Plug it into a 350 kW charger and it will be fully charged in less than 20 minutes, while it’s also compatible with the non-existent-for-now 800 kW fast charging protocol as well.

Lotus will build just 130 examples of the Evija, at $2.6 million a pop, with production scheduled to start this summer.
