There was a time not too long ago when convertible variants of high-performance cars were considered soft, overweight, and much less sporty than their hard-topped brethren. However, that’s not really the case anymore and the BMW M8 Competition Convertible shows that you can have amazing performance in a droptop without sacrificing much at all.
The guys over at AutoTopNL recently had the opportunity to put a brand new M8 Competition Convertible through its paces on the German autobahn and discovered that it is one unbelievable performance machine.

Off the line, this is a car not to be messed with. With launch control enabled, the convertible was able to rocket to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds. Making that time all the more impressive is the fact that it was recorded on a wet road and the car experienced a fair bit of wheelspin. The M8 continues to pull strongly, hitting 124 mph (200 km/h) in just 10.76 seconds, and ultimately being hustled through to 310 km/h (192 mph).
Powering the M8 Competition Convertible is the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine of the Coupe and Gran Coupe models with a plenty-full 617 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. Making the M8 so accelerative off the line is its advanced all-wheel drive system and eight-speed Steptronic transmission that snaps through the gears at stunning speeds.
We think the Coupe looks a little better than the Convertible but in the droptop, this thunderous V8 engine and exhaust note can be enjoyed fully.
