Chevrolet used the Chicago Auto Show to unveil the 2021 Equinox and now attention is turning to the facelifted GMC Terrain.

Spotted in California by Carscoops reader Tim Page, this camouflaged prototype gives us an up-close look at the crossover’s new grille. As you can see, it’s less oval-shaped and follows in the footsteps of newer models such as the Acadia, Canyon and Sierra.

Besides the new grille, there’s a modified front bumper with more prominent air intakes. The side intakes are significantly larger and they adopt new chrome accents.

While the headlights on this prototype are only temporary, GMC teased the 2021 Terrain when they unveiled the redesigned Yukon. That picture shows the new AT4 variant will feature ‘triple’ headlights which are surrounded by C-shaped LED daytime running lights.

GMC has been tight-lipped about specifics, but we can expect updates to be minor and echo those on featured on the Equinox. Engine options should also carryover and include an entry-level turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that develops 170 hp (127 kW / 172 PS) and 203 lb-ft (275 Nm) of torque. We can also expect a familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder pumping out 252 hp (188 kW / 256 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.

Given the fact that Chevrolet has already unveiled the Equinox, we wouldn’t be surprised if the 2021 GMC Terrain is introduced shortly. While nothing is official, it will likely debut at the New York Auto Show as the model should go on sale this fall.

Same GM SUV or two different ones?

Getting back to the photos, the rear views show the 2021 Equinox. Tim says all four pictures show the same crossover, but we beg to differ as the Terrain is labeled vehicle #6 and sports chrome door handles and a more pinched beltline. The Equinox, on the other hand, is vehicle #4 and it has body color door handles and a soft beltline. Besides, pictures already exist showing the facelifted Terrain will keep its claw-shaped taillights.
