Audi is launching the production of the new A3 Sportback at its Ingolstadt factory, the model’s home ever since the first generation came out back in 1996.
The 2020 Audi A3 remains an exclusive for the Ingolstadt factory, which has been upgraded with a completely new body shop specifically for it.
Based on an updated MQB platform, Audi’s compact hatchback is almost the same in size with its predecessor, save the width which has been increased by 30 mm (1.18 in.).

The fourth generation of the Audi A3 adopts the brand’s latest design cues, featuring sportier proportions to make up for the loss of the three-door bodystyle. The front end is dominated by the more prominent front grille and the sharper LED headlights you’ve come to expect from an Audi. The sides are surprisingly more muscular featuring slightly pumped fenders, while the rear features slim LED taillights in the same fashion with the latest Q3.
The initial engine range will consist of the 150 PS 1.5-liter TFSI petrol unit and of a 2.0-liter TDI diesel with either 116 PS or 150 PS. The three engine options will be available only with front-wheel drive at this launch phase and will be paired to a standard six-speed manual or a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission.
More models will of course follow on a later date, including a base version with a 1.0-liter TFSI three-cylinder petrol and a mild-hybrid variant of the 1.5-liter TFSI unit. The hotter S3 and RS3 variants are expected to be revealed later this year, with the former powered by a 300+ PS 2.0-liter TFSI and the latter still using that charismatic 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo engine.
The production start of the new Audi A3 Sportback comes as the company has already opened the order books in many European markets. The first customer cars will be delivered at the beginning of May.
