While the VW ID.3 might be the smallest all-electric ID model we’ve seen introduced and showcased by the German marque, there’s reportedly an even smaller EV being developed by VW and it could hit the market as early as 2023.
Car Magazine claims that Volkswagen is readying an electric city car dubbed the ID.1 that will have a similar footprint to the e-Up! and act as the replacement to that vehicle.

As the ID.1 will be marketed towards city dwellers, it won’t need a massive battery pack. In fact, VW is expected to offer two battery capacities of 24 kWh and 36 kWh in its upcoming electric city car.
The larger 36 kWh pack could offer up to 185 miles (300 km) of range on a single charge, more than enough for most buyers who live in built-up urban environments and typically only go on short journeys. The ID.1 will likely only feature a single electric motor but it remains to be seen if it will drive the front wheels or the rear wheels like the Honda e.
In terms of styling, the ID.1 is expected to look like the ID.3 albeit much smaller. Consequently, it will feature the same faux front grille as other models in VW’s ID family and also feature short front and rear overhangs. The utilization of an electric powertrain will help to maximize interior space and make the city car feel more spacious than its size would suggest.
