What we have here is an interesting but overall rather unfair comparison test between a BMW X7 M50i, a Mercedes GLS 400d and a dual-motor Tesla Model X. Well that just doesn’t make any sense, does it?
It’s unfair because the BMW is equipped with a 530 PS (523 HP) 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 unit, while the Mercedes packs a 3.0-liter diesel with 330 PS (325 HP). As for the Model X, it’s the dual-motor long range variant with 470 PS (463 HP).
On paper, the Tesla and the Bimmer are sort of a match for each other, but why feed an under-powered GLS to them? Alas, the three met in a straight line drag race (standstill and roll) and, well, we’ll let you see what happened without spoiling the fun.

If you’re just going to compare them in every single other category, then it becomes a question of what your expectations are from a large SUV. If you want something that feels and looks futuristic, then there’s not much the X7 and GLS can do to sway you from buying a Model X.
However, in terms of overall built quality (both inside and out) and comfort, especially on the move, the Tesla isn’t as good as the Mercedes or BMW. And yes, even though the Model X is fully electric and there’s no engine noise, the overall sound insulation (wind and tire noise) isn’t exactly worthy of a large premium SUV.
In the end, it really depends on the type of SUV you’re looking for. If you want to go electric, then a Model X will work wonders as a zero emissions family hauler. However, if you want to stick to good old fashioned internal combustion (for whatever reason), then you’ll be interested to know that this reviewer chose the X7 over the GLS, claiming that “it feels more luxurious and it’s slightly nicer to drive.”
