When the R35-generation Nissan GT-R launched over a decade ago, it put the supercar industry on notice and quickly established itself as one of the most accelerative vehicles on the market. Fast forward to 2020 and the Tesla Model 3 offers up similar acceleration to many much-more expensive exotics. Which of these two is the quickest off the line?
A Model 3 owner and the driver of a Nissan GT-R Nismo recently lined up for a sprint down a dragstrip somewhere in the United States to give us the answer.
It’s important to note that the Model 3 featured in this clip isn’t the range-topping Performance model. Instead, it is the Dual Motor Long Range variant complete with the latest ‘Acceleration Boost’ upgrade that means it accelerates almost as quickly as the Performance.

Off the line, the Tesla gets a slight jump on the Nissan but before long, Godzilla puts all of its power to good use and stretches out a lead. However, despite the GT-R racing off down the quarter-mile, the Tesla did a respectable job and didn’t get absolutely blown away. The Nissan ultimately crossed the quarter-mile in 11.1 seconds compared to the 12.1 seconds required by the Tesla.
Would the result have been any different if this was a Tesla Model 3 Performance? No. A standard Model 3 Performance can dip into the 11-second range but from what we can tell, there are no verified runs of them clocking anything below 11.5 seconds, meaning the GT-R has a slight edge.
