Ford will launch an all-electric version of the Transit in Canada and the United States in 2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle.

The Ford Transit is the world’s best-selling cargo van and, as the market for electric delivery vehicles rapidly expands, Ford has decided it is time for an electric Transit. The automaker first announced an electric Transit for the European market in 2019 and that vehicle will become available in 2021 in both Europe and North America.

Ford says its U.S. truck and van fleet sales have grown 33 per cent since 2015 and has confirmed that the electric Transit will be built locally as part of the carmaker’s more than $11.5 billion investment in electrification through to 2022.

“Commercial vehicles are a critical component to our big bet on electrification,” said Ford chief operating officer Jim Farley. “As leaders in this space, we are accelerating our plans to create solutions that help businesses run better, starting with our all-electric Transit and F-150. This Ford Transit isn’t just about creating an electric drivetrain, it’s about designing and developing a digital product that propels fleets forward,” the executive added.

Ford has yet to offer specifics about the electric Transit’s powertrain. However, it says the van will feature FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot and access to Ford Data Services that includes live map GPS tracking, geofencing, and vehicle diagnostics. In addition, the electric Transit will arrive as standard with Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking plus Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning, Post-Collision Braking, Lane-Keeping System, and auto high-beam headlights.

The electric Ford Transit will be offered in cargo van, cutaway, and chassis cab guises, with three available roof heights and three body lengths.
