It appears that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ global design boss Ralph Gilles and his team use the time spent working from home in a productive manner.
The chief designer has posted an interesting rendering on Instagram that he says previews a next-generation Dodge vehicle. “We are never to show future product on social media. I have made an exception this time as this experimental design of a Dodge of the future fell on the cutting room floor,” the design boss wrote in the caption accompanying the design sketch.
Curious to learn why Gilles rejected this proposal? Well, it was because “the designer decided to make the yellow spoiler guards a permanent part of the theme.” Like many people, Ralph Gilles does not seem to appreciate the fact that some Dodge customers leave the plastic splitter guards on their Challengers and Chargers.

However, we wouldn’t go as far as believing that the design boss rejected this proposal simply because it featured splitter guards; after all, those could have been easily erased in Photoshop. We do appreciate Gilles speaking his mind about those annoying splitter guards, though.
As for the design sketch itself, it proposes a radical departure from today’s Dodge Charger and Challenger and that’s to be expected. After all, the current LX/LD iteration of the sedan has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 2005 – and the same goes for the Challenger since 2008. Highlights include a flatter body, an aggressive front end dominated by a huge lower grille and sharp splitter, ultra-thin double headlights on each side, a wraparound windshield and a very muscular shoulder line. We can also spot two hood extractors and concave surfacing on the doors, among other details.
Obviously, the concept car’s design traits are dramatized as it always happens with sketches but we wouldn’t mind if the next-generation Charger or Challenger looked half as good as this. We’ll have to wait until 2023 to find out if this design sketch had any influence in shaping the successors to Dodge’s current muscle cars.
