Ford’s first ever virtual race car will not be based on any existing real-world model, instead it will be designed fresh from the ground up with the help of the gaming community.

Dubbed the ‘Team Fordzilla P1’ project, the virtual race car will be influenced not just by the Ford of Europe Design Team, but also by the captains of Ford’s five Fordzilla eSports teams from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

“Coming up with a no-holds barred race car for the virtual world is when the gloves come off and the design team can really let their imaginations fly. The expertise of gamers is crucial to ensuring that this will be the best-looking car on the grid,” said Ford of Europe design director, Amko Leenarts.

In order to reach out to the wider gaming community, Team Fordzilla P1 project designers will pass along key design decisions through a series of Twitter polls that will be posted by TeamFordzilla.

Each poll will promote a key design attribute, from engine to cockpit, with gamers getting to have their say.

“We all love racing our dream cars but ultimately these are usually painstaking recreations of vehicles that actually exist in the real world,” said Leah Alexandra, captain of the UK Fordzilla team. “It will be an absolute thrill to get behind the wheel of the #TeamFordzillaP1 for the first time knowing that not only have we helped to create it but that no-one else has ever driven it before.”
