Hyundai Shows More Of New i20, Wants To Impress You With Its High-Tech Interior

Hyundai has released more details and pictures on its new i20 supermini and its tech-laden interior, which represents a radical departure from its predecessor.

The new subcompact from the Korean carmaker adopts the brand’s new dynamic design language, called ‘Sensuous Sportiness’, aspiring to become one of the stars of its segment that includes models like the Ford Fiesta and the Peugeot 208.

Hyundai says that its goal with the interior of the new i20 was to create a spacious, airy atmosphere that offers modern aesthetics and all the tech features available.

A key design element of the dashboard is the use of horizontal blades from door card to door card, blending with the four air vents for a modern look. The new i20 also makes use of a pair of 10.25-inch digital screens for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The latter comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while wireless charging and a high-end Bose audio system with eight speakers are also available.

According to Hyundai, it also features “the most comprehensive” range of active safety systems in the segment, including navigation-based active cruise control, a new generation of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with both pedestrian and cyclist detection and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist among others.

Hyundai wanted the new i20 to look more dynamic, making it lower by 24 mm, wider by 30 mm and marginally longer by 5 mm, compared to its predecessor. The wheelbase has been increased by 10mm which increased the space for rear passengers. The luggage space has also been increased by 25 liters to a total of 351 liters.

The engine range includes the 1.0-liter T-GDI petrol in two versions, with 100 PS (99 HP) or 120 PS (118 HP). This unit is paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for the first time, either as an option on the 100 PS (99 HP) version or as standard on the 120 PS (118 HP) edition. Hyundai claims that the 48-volt system helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 3-4 percent. A six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are available with both versions of the 1.0-liter T-GDI.

The company will also offer a 1.2-liter MPi engine with 84 PS (83 HP) and a five-speed manual transmission as the base version of the new i20. As for the market launch, Hyundai’s new Fiesta and Polo challenger is scheduled to arrive in the European market this summer.
