McLaren’s ultimate driver car is called the Elva. It joins the Senna and Speedtail in the Ultimate Series lineup as a nod to the Elva M1A of the 1960s, and comes with all of the bells and whistles required from a high-performance machine.

What it doesn’t have though, is a windscreen, but as it turns out, it doesn’t need one to keep the wind away from the passenger compartment. At 60 or 70 mph (96-113 km/h), the Elva’s advanced aerodynamics kick in.

Air is sucked in through the bumper and fired upwards out of the bonnet. As the car is traveling, the air is then bent back and curved over the cockpit, acting as a virtual canopy to keep hairstyles intact – along with  those annoying bugs out of your teeth.

The British automaker explained the effect and what they did to the car to achieve it in a video posted on social media earlier this week and shared at the bottom of the page. So, if you’re into the geeky stuff, or simply want to learn something new to tell your petrol head friends, you should head on down and click the play button.

Before you do, we will remind you that production of the Elva is limited to 399 units and pricing starts at $1,690,000. Power comes from the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that develops 804 horsepower and 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) of torque. The supercar is faster than the Senna, needing less than 3 seconds to sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h), and 6.7 seconds to hit the 124 mph (200 km/h) mark.
