A rare 2016 McLaren MSO HS has sold for $390,000 at Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island auction, falling short of the pre-auction estimate of between $400,000 and $450,000.

The McLaren MSO HS was introduced by the British automaker in 2016 and is based around the 675LT, one of the British marque’s most iconic road-going models. Only 25 units were ever manufactured and while no pricing details were made public, each MSO HS is thought to have sold for well over $350,000, the starting price of the 675LT. A search online shows that McLaren Philadelphia currently has an all-black MSO HS for sale with an asking price of $599,999.

The example auctioned by Gooding & Company over the weekend was delivered new on December 21, 2016 to McLaren San Francisco and purchased on January 3, 2017. It is finished in MSO F1 Chrome paint and is number 20 of just 25 units produced. It includes a plethora of optional MSO parts include carbon fiber mirror arms and casing, titanium oil and water filler caps, polished aluminum rear-wing uprights, and the Carbon Fiber Interior Upgrade Package. Mileage at the time of the auction was sitting at just below 1,900 miles (~3,050 km).

As the McLaren MSO HS is based around the 675LT, it features the same basic 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine but has been uprated to 688 PS or 678 hp while delivering the same 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. A series of weight-saving measures mean the car is 40 kg (88 lbs) lighter than the 675LT while aggressive aerodynamic add-ons create much more downforce.

It seems apparent the winning bidder of the car walked away with a bit of a bargain.
