For a few years now, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has been one of the most accelerative SUVs on the market, capable of speeds that truly boggle the mind. Surely a BMW X4 M Competition can’t keep up?
Cars magazine in South Africa recently lined up the duo for a pair of drag races down an empty runway and the results are quite shocking, to say the least.
On paper, the Trackhawk has a significant advantage over the BMW. It is driven by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 ‘Hellcat’ engine churning out 707 hp and 645 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque and can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in a claimed 3.5 seconds and a 180 mph (290 km/h) top speed.

By comparison, the BMW X4 M Competition features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder offering up 503 hp and 442 lb-ft (599 Nm) of torque for a manufacturer posted time of 4.0-seconds flat for the 0-60mph (96km/h) and a 177 mph (284 km/h) top speed with the optional M Driver’s Package
In the first race between the two, the Jeep gets a slightly better launch and maintains a lead of about half a car length down the quarter-mile. It recorded a time of 11.89 seconds and hit 62 mph in 3.94 seconds. By comparison, the BMW ran down the quarter-mile in 12.14 seconds and needed 4.5 seconds to hit 62 mph.
In the second race, things go a bit differently. After swapping drivers, the Jeep once again got off the line slightly better, hitting 62 mph in 3.83 seconds compared to the 3.85 seconds of the BMW. However, as the duo continue down the quarter-mile, the BMW somehow passes the Jeep, despite having 204 hp less.
