Long before the Fisker Karma came along as one of the first ‘green’ vehicles that was actually appealing to the eye, the company founded by Henrik Fisker was a coachbuilder and had two models in its lineup. These were the Fisker Tramonto, based on a Mercedes-Benz SL, and the Fisker Latigo CS, based on a BMW 6-Series.

One of these rare cars recently went up for auction on Bring A Trailer and while bidding reached $77,500, it failed to hit the reserve and wasn’t sold. Nevertheless, it’s worth writing about in a little more detail.

Fisker had intended to build 150 examples of the Tramonto but only ended up building 15. The unit in question is finished in metallic gray and is thought to be one of just two that features the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V12 engine of an SL600. Mileage sits at a mere 6,000 miles (~9,600 km) and the car was offered with all the original literature, a commemorative watch, service records, Henrik Fisker’s signature on the visor, a clean Carfax report, and a clean California title.

The bodywork adorning the Tramonto is finished in a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber with the droptop sitting on a set of three-piece 20-inch wheels. The stock brakes of an SL600 have been retained.

Although Fisker did a good job of making the Tramonto look unlike the Mercedes on which it’s based, those with a keen eye will recognize the roofline and folding hardtop of the SL. The interior is very similar to a standard SL but does include new tan leather upholstery on the seats, door panels, dashboard, steering wheel, and center console. This Tramonto was previously owned by Henrik Fisker himself.
