The McLaren 765LT was recently unveiled and Top Gear had the opportunity to take an up-close look at the lightweight and more track-focused variant of the 720S.

The first thing to point out about the 765LT are the looks. It is extraordinarily aggressive and makes the Senna look even more questionable than it already did. Compared to the 675LT, however, the new Longtail-badged model is a little less refined and more in-your-face. According to some, the car looks like it’s come from an aftermarket firm like Novitec and not an important OEM like McLaren.

Regardless of how you feel about the design, it’s impossible not to be impressed with the performance that’s being promised.

Powering the McLaren 765LT is a revised twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine with forged aluminum pistons, a revised oil pump, an additional fuel pump, and a recalibrated engine management system so the supercar churns out 755 hp and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) of torque. Alterations have also been made to the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to create 15 per cent quicker in-gear acceleration than the 720S.

In a straight line, McLaren says the car can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.7 seconds and 124 mph (200 km/h) in 7.2 seconds. It can also sprint down the quarter-mile in less than 10 seconds and reach a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h).

The 765LT also happens to be 176 lbs (79 kg) lighter than the 720S, tipping the scales at just 2,709 lbs (1,229 kg). This comes despite the fact that it’s adorned with a host of new exterior parts including a larger rear wing.

As Jack Rix mentions in this video, the 765LT is the first model in McLaren’s LT family to be a direct successor to another LT model, the 675LT, so it has a lot to live up to.
