Toyota has announced it is adding 1.2 million vehicles to a U.S. recall over possible fuel pump failures, ABC News reports. This brings the total number of vehicles embroiled in the recall up to 1.8 million in the U.S. and making for a total of 3.2 million vehicles worldwide.
The initial recall announced in January included no less than 696,000 vehicles in the United States from the Toyota and Lexus brands.
The Japanese car manufacturer initially said select Toyota and Lexus models have a fuel pump that could stop working. Toyota hasn’t explained why the fuel pump could suddenly malfunction but has confirmed that if it does, the engine may run rough, could stall, and may be unable to be restarted. If the vehicle were to stall at higher speeds, it could trigger a crash.
Toyota says owners of vehicles not involved in the January recall will be notified in early May about when they can make a service appointment. Dealers will replace the defective fuel pump with a new one.
