For a car whose deliveries started just a few weeks ago, the new generation Chevrolet Corvette has far exceeded its fifteen minutes of fame. So far, we’ve seen it become a head-turner no matter where it was spotted, be it at the drag strip or downtown.

On this occasion, the American sports car was taken somewhere far from civilization with a single thing in mind: seeing as many miles per hour as possible on the digital speedometer. The video was recorded on a dry lake bed somewhere in Utah, which is not ideal for testing the top speed of any car due to the loose surfaces and other dangers, but at least it was far away from public roads.

Now, should you ask Chevy, they will tell you that the 2020 Corvette can hit a maximum speed of 194 mph (312 km/h), if you can find a straight long enough. Nonetheless, on this particular attempt to travel as fast as possible, the vehicle hit 173 mph (278 km/h) before the guy driving it hit the brake pedal.

Mind you, you can see a bit of a wiggle for a brief moment, so that was a potentially dangerous situation. Fortunately, the pants didn’t change color, so all’s well that ends well.

As a bonus footage, you can watch the new Corvette, which rocks a 6.2-liter V8 making up to 495 HP and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque, hit top speed in reverse in the same video. The whole action begins at the 6:16 mark, so you may want to check it out from there. As for the reverse top speed run, it starts at 12:53.
