Having been facelifted in 2019, one might think that the current Renault Trafic will stick around for a few more years.

However, the French automaker appears to have different plans for its medium-sized van, which will be replaced soon by a new generation. A test prototype was spied testing in the cold in Scandinavia in passenger van body style, wearing heavy camouflage on the entire front end.

Even with the thick wraps on, we can still see that the major elements, such as the bumper, grille and headlights, are different.

Compared to its predecessor, the bonnet is slightly longer and has been raised a bit, opening up more space in the engine compartment as a result. This probably means Renault is planning to electrify the light commercial vehicle, positioning it as a more affordable alternative to the all-electric Mercedes-Benz eVito. We don’t know yet whether the company has similar plans when it comes to the new Trafic, but never say never.

Elsewhere, the shoulder line, rear doors, taillights, bumper and pretty much everything else carries over from the outgoing Trafic, suggesting that this is a test mule of the vehicle. Still, when it premieres sometime next year, the 2021 Trafic should get big updates at the rear, as well as a redesigned cockpit. We expect a new dashboard panel, infotainment system and part or full digital gauges, in addition to the usual safety gear that could be enhanced to welcome other features.

Like before, it should be offered in two body styles, Crew Van and Panel Van, in different specs and equipment levels, depending on each market.
