The third-generation Cadillac CTS eschewed the coupe and wagon variants of its predecessor, but the sport wagon could eventually make a return.

Appearing on Autoline, GM / Cadillac Executive Chief Engineer Brandon Vivian was asked if the company can make a business case for a CT5 Sport Wagon. He responded by saying it’s something he has looked into “many, many, many times.”

Vivian went on to say there is plenty of enthusiasm for wagons and “absolute fanaticism” for V wagons. As a result, the company continues to study the possibility of future wagon variants.

However, he said there is nothing to announce. Vivian also didn’t answer whether or not Cadillac could build a business case for a CT5 wagon, but he said the company “continues to look for opportunities to make money.” That likely means Cadillac would likely only build a CT5 wagon if it would be profitable.

While fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, there’s been a bit of a wagon resurgence in the United States. Audi has been riding this wave as they brought the A6 Allroad back to America and will soon offer the RS6 Avant stateside.

Besides talking about a possible wagon, Vivian said the company continues to look for opportunities to use the twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 Blackwing engine that briefly appeared in the CT6-V. He also stated the new Blackwing moniker, which will adorn high-performance versions of the CT4- and CT5-V, stands for “craftsmanship, technology and performance.”

Last but not least, he acknowledged Cadillac has seen the need for performance crossovers and SUVs. Vivian was coy on specifics, but said they are “actively looking at all possibilities” and noted there will be more to say in the future.
