Daihatsu has started accepting pre-orders for the cute Taft that was showcased as a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon late last year.
The kei car adopts pseudo-rugged design and measures just 3,395 mm (133.6-inch) long, 1,475 mm (58.1-inch) wide, and 1,630 mm (64.2-inch) high. While the Daihatsu Taft pictured far below is the concept from last year, the production-spec model isn’t expected to undergo all that many visual modifications. In fact, it should look largely identical.

The name of the Taft is an acronym for ‘Tough & Almighty Fun Tool’. A look at the Japanese pre-order website for the vehicle is intriguing to say the least as it appears as though anyone ordering the Taft has a number of extra goodies to choose from to go along with the car. For starters, Daihatsu is offering buyers the choice of a special photo book, a wireless Bluetooth speaker, a kettle, or a portable coffee maker.
Daihatsu is accepting pre-orders for the Taft until Sunday, May 31 with the production model expected to premiere in June.
Like the vast majority of kei cars built since 1990, the Daihatsu Taft is sold exclusively with a 660 cc three-cylinder engine. This engine is coupled to a CVT that sends power exclusively through the front wheels.
The Taft concept presented at the Tokyo Auto Salon in December 2019 was finished in a dark shade of green and had a very boxy and square design, not too dissimilar to the shape of the Suzuki Jimny. The green and blue examples pictured sport different front grilles, leading us to believe that customers will have a variety of options available to make their Taft stand out.
