The last previous-gen Porsche 911 made was auctioned off to benefit a good cause, managing to raise $550,000.

Proceeds will be donated to United Way Worldwide, which is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in North America. The sum has been doubled courtesy of a $500,000 contribution from Porsche Cars North America.

“When we began this project, I wanted to use our voice to help raise awareness for funding for the incredible work of United Way”, said President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Klaus Zellmer. “I’m pleased to have helped draw attention to their efforts and I’m deeply appreciative of the generosity and kindness of all the participants and the winning bidder. We are joining in that spirit by making our own donation on top of the winning bid for this special part of our history.”

Hosted by RM Sotheby’s, the auction was available to U.S. residents only and commenced on April 15. When the virtual gavel hit the table on April 22, at 1:00 p.m. EDT, 32 bids brought the sum to $550,000. During the 7-day period, the auction house noted more than 48,500 unique page views, which was more than the average number usually recorded.

The final 991 built is a 911 Speedster, one of only 1,948, which had an MSRP of $274,500 when it was still on sale in the States. It’s equipped with the optional Heritage Design Package that adds classic elements from the ‘50s and ‘60s Porsches. This includes the GT silver metallic paint finish, black brake calipers with white Porsche logos, silver-colored wheels, gold Speedster badging and two-tone black and cognac leather interior.

Power comes from the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six that kicks out 503 horsepower and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque, matched to a 6-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It needs only 4.0 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill and can keep pushing up to 193 mph (310 km/h).

In addition to the car, the winning bidder will also receive the Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Speedster Heritage Design timepiece, complete with the chassis number of the 911 Speedster etched onto the casing. They will also get a letter of authenticity signed by Frank-Steffen Walliser, 911 chief engineer, and Andreas Preuninger, Porsche GT car division boss. Also included is a book containing images of the vehicle as it was being built, press clippings and original sketches.

Finally, the owner gets an invitation for two at Porsche’s engineering and design headquarters in Weissach, Germany, as guests of Walliser and Preuninger. The car will be handed over during a special event hosted by Klaus Zellmer, Porsche Cars North America President and CEO.
