The idea of a zombie apocalypse has always been dismissed as a silly thing by most people, but in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, suddenly, it doesn’t seem that far-fetched anymore.
Obviously, one should not take it literally, as the dead will not rise from their graves and attack us. However, if this situation worsens and millions of people are running out of toilet paper, you never know what kind of desperate measures they’ll resort to survive.
In this context, people may become increasingly interested in ways to make their homes and their cars more secure. Enter the Maruti Suzuki Gymni battle van, probably the cutest zombie apocalypse car you’ll ever see.

Built by India-based Holy Shift Garage as part of a local TV show, this tiny yet tough battle van looked condemned to end up in the crusher before the guys saved it and gave it a new meaning in life. Since the Maruti Suzuki Omni (India’s version of the Suzuki Every) donor car didn’t even move and its engine didn’t start, the builders stripped it down to a bare shell and started the transformation from there.
They replaced the derelict stock engine with a 1.0-liter four-cylinder engine, transmission and differential from the Maruti Gypsy (a rebadged Suzuki Jimny SJ40), upgraded the suspension, added a sturdier rear axle and a lift kit while at it.
Then came the extensive modifications to the bodywork, which included the deletion of the rear windows, addition of a beefy external roll cage and a roof rack, as well as Maxxis Trepador off-road tires. The guys also added a second roof rack to carry a motorcycle, a huge bull bar and a skid plate, six auxiliary lights up front, and an LED bar in the back.
Topping it all off is a custom paint job and a new name: Gymni. That’s a combination of the Gypsy and Omni, the two vehicles that donated essential parts for the battle van to become a reality.
