The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray are two of the hottest performance cars on the market right now but which is fastest around a racetrack? The following video answers that question.

It is no secret that the Ford has a significant power advantage over the Chevy. It’s also more expensive on paper starting from $73,995 versus the Corvette’s advertised $59,995 MSRP, but we all know that’s not entirely true, as the Ford is more fully equipped, while most C8 owners will add at least a few extras like the $5k Z51 performance package. But we digress.

Driving the ultimate Mustang is a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine offering up 760 hp and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque, all of which is sent to the rear wheels courtesy of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Not even mid-engined supercars like the McLaren 720S or Ferrari F8 Tributo have quite as much power as this insane Mustang.

The Corvette is also well down on power as its 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 is rated at 495 hp and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) with the Z51 Performance Package. However, the ‘Vette has a few things going for it, namely the fact that the engine is positioned behind the cabin. The Corvette is also significantly lighter, tipping the scales at roughly 3,366 lbs (1,527 kg) compared to the portly 4,225 lbs (1,916 kg) of the GT500.

The following test was conducted by YouTuber Speed Phenom at Willow Springs Raceway, a circuit that mixes together long straights and sweeping corners with some tighter sections.

While the YouTuber says the Mustang has more front-end grip than the Corvette, it was unable to keep pace around the circuit, recording a best time of 1:33.22. By comparison, the C8 set a lap time of 1:31.62.
