Want to stand out of the crowd with a really special set of wheels? Few cars scream ‘look at me, I’m not from here’ more than the very rare Aztec Barchetta.
Also known as the Audi Aztec, it was designed in the late ‘80s by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. The exact production number is unknown, although some believe that around only 15 were made, while others state that it was probably somewhere between that and 50.

Regardless of how many of them are out there, the Aztec Barchetta remains a head turner three decades after we first laid eyes on it, and we’ve found one for sale on Mobile. The ad was posted by MTM and shows the car listed for €189,000 ($206,444). That’s a small fortune for most of us, who will never have that kind of money to spend on a ride, although it’s a bargain compared to last time we saw one for sale, which cost €999,880 ($1,092,170).
The vendor claims that it’s one of the very last Barchettas made, as it came out in 1992, in the fourth and final year of production. It was first registered three years later, and there’s only one owner in the papers, who put around 1,000 km (620 miles) on the odometer.
That futuristic body still looks good, and so does the unique interior with a design that partly separates the driver from the passenger. The leather upholstery is in good condition and the plastics don’t appear to be scratched.
Looks aside, the Aztec Barchetta features an Audi Quattro-sourced 2.2-liter five-cylinder engine and a Lancia Delta Integrale five-speed manual transmission, so the rally DNA is very much present. The question is, would you buy it instead of a more modern supercar?
