Over the years, Mazda has toyed around with the idea of an Miata Speedster, with the latest attempt being the MX-5 Speedster Evolution Concept in 2016.
Unfortunately, none of Mazda’s Miata Speedster studies made it to production and chances are this first-generation Miata Speedster envisioned by freelance automotive designer Kasim Tlibekov won’t be built either. But what a shame that would be.
The freelance designer imagined a Miata NA with plenty of modifications beyond the Speedster treatment. Obviously, the most important change is the removal of the windshield, with the Miata Speedster getting a tiny windshield above the instrument panel instead of a full-blown windshield.

As you can see, there’s no such aero element in front of the passenger, which means a helmet is mandatory – for the driver as well. We can also spot an aero cowling tonneau cover behind the seats, a lip spoiler, and a rear diffuser flanked by two round exhausts.
The designer also applied a widebody kit consisting of broader front and rear fenders connected by more pronounced side sills. The bumpers are also redesigned with a more aggressive look, with the lower ride height and massive wheels contributing to the meaner appearance as well. Rounding out the exterior upgrades are the headlights and taillights which get sleek LED signatures outlining their shape.
Tlibekov does not say what type of powertrain he had in mind for the Miata Speedster but we can imagine it wasn’t the stock 115 HP 1.6-liter four-cylinder. What would you put in this cool MX-5 NA build? The current-generation’s 181 HP 2.0-liter four-cylinder would be a good fit in combination with the six-speed manual transmission, don’t you think?
