The driver of a McLaren 600LT has discovered the hard way that the mid-engined British supercar is not particularly fond of flash-flood waters.

The video below was filmed in Charleston, South Carolina after the city was hit by a heavy storm that triggered flash flooding. For some bizarre reason, the 600LT’s driver decided to try and following a pickup truck directly in front of them in crossing a piece of flooded road. It didn’t go well.

As soon as the water starts to deepen, the grey McLaren turns to the right. It is unclear if the driver turned intentionally in an attempt to try and find some shallower waters or was perhaps disoriented by the water splashing over the windscreen. Either way, the supercar ends up driving straight into a grassy embankment to the side of the flooded road. For a few seconds, the car’s reverse light comes on as the driver tries to back up but by then it was already too late. The McLaren was stuck.

Speaking to News 2 about the incident, Twitter user @mikesj73 who filmed the video said the driver of the 600LT was okay but that the car “didn’t sound great.” It remains unclear what happened after the video cuts off. On a side note, News 2 hilariously refers to the McLaren as a “Corvette” in its news report on the incident.

If the flood waters continued to rise after the car got stuck, there’s every chance it could have suffered quite a lot of damage. If the waters quickly subsided, the driver may have got away with it.
