Police in Connecticut are urging motorists to remember to take their keys after parking their cars following a spate of thefts.

Fox 61 reports that no less than 27 cars were stolen across the state in a 24-hour period earlier this week. Remarkably, 20 of the cars that were stolen had the keys left inside. Yes, people continue to park their cars and leave the keys inside, despite the desperate times we’re living in.

Hartford Police took to Twitter to remind residents of Connecticut of the importance of locking their vehicles and removing the keys.

“Twenty-seven (27) cars stolen in the State of CT in the past 24-hrs, mostly from the suburbs. 20 stolen w/the keys left in the car. This happened last night. Several scour for unlocked cars, a driver in a stolen car maintains contact. LOCK YOUR CARS-TAKE YOUR KEYS,” they wrote.

Police also shared security camera vision from outside a home that shows a would-be thief trying to open the door of a parked Nissan. After unsuccessfully trying to open the door, the person runs away with a fellow thief, presumably to see if the neighbor had left their car unlocked or the keys inside. A vehicle presumably driven by an accomplice of the thieves can be seen slowly driving along the road.

We’ve never understood why someone would think it is a good idea to leave their car unlocked or the keys inside, regardless of where you live. It sounds like nothing more than sheer laziness to us.
