With social distancing changing how we live our lives, car manufacturers are thinking up new ways to deliver cars to customers while reducing face-to-face contact. In China, Geely is using an innovative drone-delivery system while over in the U.S., Tesla has changed the way it is now handing over keys to new car buyers.
For local buyers eagerly waiting to take delivery of their new Tesla models, the automaker is now offering two pick-up options: Express Delivery and Direct Drop, Motor Trend reports.
Express Delivery
The Express Delivery option requires shoppers to head to a local Tesla Delivery Center, although this could be difficult for some due to stay-at-home orders. Nevertheless, for those that can leave their house, they can check-in for a scheduled appointment at a Tesla Delivery Center and inspect their car.
All of the required documents will be placed inside and prepared ahead of time with highlights pointing where customers need to sign. Owners can also access tutorial videos through the infotainment system on how to operate the car and its various functions. Once everything is signed, an advisor will collect the documents and a technician will add a temporary tag and license plate.
Direct Drop
The second option, Direct Drop, reduces face-to-face contact even further. This service allows customers to complete all the necessary paperwork digitally and gives them access to the Tesla app where they can choose a location to have the car dropped off, most likely at their home.

Tesla will drop off the car and the owner will be able to unlock the vehicle through the app and complete some physical paperwork left inside the car. This paperwork needs to be sent back to the automaker within 24 hours in a pre-paid shipping envelope that’s provided. Direct Drop is available in California, Indiana, Washington, DC, Virginia, Utah, Ohio, Texas, Nevada, New Jersey, Missouri, Minnesota, Maryland, Indiana, and Hawaii.
