In a move that was largely expected after the extended shutdown across the States over the conoravirus pandemic – and despite GM officials (understandably) claiming the fifth over the past few weeks, the world premiere of the GMC Hummer EV has been indefinitely delayed.
The original plan that was communicated through a series of Super Bowl commercials with NBA star LeBron James earlier this year was to present the Tesla-rivaling electric truck at a special event on May 20 in Detroit, which would have been attended by hundreds of people from the media, dealers and the company itself. The automaker said the official unveiling will be held sometime in the future, without committing to a specific date.

GM confirmed the news on Wednesday with the following statement:
“While we cannot wait to show the GMC HUMMER EV to the world, we will reschedule the May 20 reveal date. In the meantime, the team’s development work continues on track and undeterred. We invite all to stay tuned for more stories on this super truck’s incredible capability leading up to its official debut.”
No changes to production and launch dates
On the bright side, GM says that production and the commercial launch of the new Hummer EV remains on schedule for fall of 2021 at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which has already started to be retooled to build exclusively electric vehicles following a $2.2 billion investment.
Along with the announcement, GMC treated us to a new video teaser of the Hummer EV showing the truck from above without its removable roof panels while running through a forest.
The electric Hummer will be built on a new platform and will be offered with 1, 2 and 3 motor variants producing up to 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) and 11,500 lb-ft (15,574 Nm) of torque, with the most powerful model accelerating from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in three seconds.
Besides the crew cab pickup version with a five-foot bed that was teased here, an SUV variant that’s said to be around inches (229 mm) shorter is expected to join the range in the near future.
