The one and only 1964 Pontiac Banshee XP-833 prototype is currently up for sale from a Kia dealership in Connecticut with an eye-watering price tag of $750,000.
A team within General Motors were behind the Banshee with none other than John DeLorean acting as the lead designer for the project. The aim was to build a rival to the Ford Mustang of the day that would have had as much grunt as a Corvette but weighed approximately 500 lbs (227 kg) less. Unsurprisingly, GM executives didn’t want Pontiac to build a car that out-performed the Corvette so the Banshee never reached production.
The car is now owned by Lenny Napoli who operates both Kia and Nissan dealerships in Milford, Connecticut. It is listed for sale on both of those dealership websites as well as through Napoli Classics. Napoli is said to be a noted Pontiac collector and may have acquired the Banshee when it was sold during the 2015 Dragone Auction in Connecticut. Before that, it had been sold at Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale, in 2006, for $214,500.

Powering the vehicle is a 230 cubic-inch (3.7-liter) straight-six engine that’s mated to a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Aiding in the vehicle’s promised performance back in the day was the fact that it was very light thanks to the C3 Corvette-inspired bodywork being made from lightweight fiberglass.
The listing reveals the Banshee has just 1,498 miles (2,410 km) on the clock and is in excellent condition, even though it is only a prototype. Not only does the bodywork remain stylish to this day but the interior, clad in red leather, looks to have been well maintained.
