A 1948 Tucker Convertible has popped up for sale on eBay.

Listed for $2,175,000 (£1,734,650 / £1,991,419), the convertible is one of a kind and has a unique history.

According to the listing, the convertible started out as a 48 sedan and was then modified by employees from Tucker and Lenki Engineering. As part of the conversion process, they cut off the car’s roof and reinforced the chassis. They then lengthened the front doors and modified a convertible roof sourced from a GM vehicle.

Unfortunately, fate intervened and the car wasn’t finished by the time Tucker went bust. The car remained in the hands of Lenki Engineering and reportedly stayed “untouched and under a cover for many years.” Some time later, the car was sold to a retiring employee who had plans to finish it.

The car traded hands a few more times as a number of people expressed interest in finishing what Tucker had started decades earlier. However, that didn’t happen until 2010 when the model was completed by Benchmark Classics using “body parts sourced primarily from Tucker.”

The listing goes on to say the car is equipped with a Franklin-Tucker flat-six engine which is paired to a Cord-sourced transmission just like the original. While the project likely cost a small fortune, the model has only been driven 10 miles (16 km).

While the listing notes that 16 vehicles have been completed since Tucker shuttered, they claim this will likely be the last one using original body panels. How much that matters to collectors remains to be seen, but this is the only Tucker convertible in existence so it definitely has that going for it.
