Ask Mustang enthusiasts about their favorite generation and chances are the fourth-generation model won’t be the majority’s first or second choice.
Mind you, not all Mk4 Mustangs were created equal, with the range-topping, limited-run SVT Cobra R being the most sought after of them all. Today we bring you a very rare model, number 40 of only 250 factory Cobra R cars built for the 1995 model year.
Unlike the regular Cobra’s 275 HP 5.0-liter V8, the R featured a 5.8-liter Windsor OHV V8 delivering 300 HP at 4,800 rpm and 365 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque at 3,750 rpm. Hooked to a Tremec five-speed manual gearbox, it enabled the SVT Cobra R to do 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 152 mph (245 km/h).

The Mustang SVT Cobra R also received a lightweight treatment; for that reason, it had no back seat, radio, power windows or power seats, and air conditioning. Even the fog lights were deleted, replaced with ducts necessary to cool the front disc brakes.
To improve handling on the racetrack, Ford also fitted heavy-duty progressive-rate springs, thicker stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace. While street-legal, the 1995 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R could only be bought by people who had a valid competition license or owned a race team. However, that didn’t stop several collectors to pull some strings and secure a Cobra R.
The example you see in the photos is special not just because it is rare, but also because it has covered only 187 miles (301 km) from new. It still features the factory wrap with all original window stickers and markings still on it – look closely at the interior shots and you’ll also notice the original plastic wraps in the footwells.
Like all 1995 Mustang SVT Cobra Rs, this one has a white exterior and a saddle cloth interior, both of which appear in showroom condition. That should not come as a surprise as the seller says the car has been kept in a garage with a Teflon dust cover for protection.
The car comes with original documentation from the dealer, along with numerous magazines, books and memorabilia. All original equipment is present except the battery and a replica aluminum fuel tank. Mind you, the original tank is included. The Mustang SVT Cobra R is on sale on Autotrader for $55,000, which would otherwise buy you a fully optioned 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt. What’s it going to be, then?
