The first-generation Porsche Boxster (internally known as the 986) did not have a Cayman coupe sibling like the generations that followed after it.

For that reason, some owners sought ways to transform their Porsche roadster into a hardtop to enjoy the best of both worlds. A hardtop is obviously a useful thing to have in your garage, especially if you drive your convertible sports car during the cold season.

The owner of this particular 1999 Porsche Boxster wanted more than just a regular hardtop however. Offered on eBay with a buy-it-now price of $15,750, this 986 comes with a “rare, high-end conversion package from South Africa with over $20,000 invested.”

As you can see, the conversion turns the Boxster into a Cayman before there was one or a 911 coupe of the 996 generation, if you like. According to the ad, the complicated hardtop is easy to install and remove, with each operation taking about 10 minutes.

We wouldn’t have much to comment about the hardtop if if weren’t for the ridiculous rear wing and roof scoop that come with it. Mind you, even in roadster configuration, this Boxster has been gifted a fixed rear wing so there’s no escaping that.

And there’s more where that come from as you’ll discover additional over-the-top mods present on this car, such as the shiny chrome wheels, chrome headlight and taillight surrounds, and chrome trim on the side air intakes. The custom side skirts fit in the same category, as do the gold Porsche 986 decals on the sides. Thankfully, the cabin appears largely in stock condition, minus the audio system upgrade.

The seller claims the camel interior and black canvas top are like new, and the car runs perfectly. About that, this Boxster with Florida plates features a 201 HP 2.5-liter flat-six engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission and has covered 111,000 miles (178,637 km) from new.
