Getting on the pedal on their Ford Mustang Boss 302 has had disastrous consequences for one petrol head, who wanted to enjoy California’s twisty canyon roads before lockdown, as they plunged off a cliff on March 28.
Fortunately, he walked away to tell the tale, with only minor bruising on their face, and contacted the California Highway Patrol to report the accident. As reported by Motortrend, the driver had to be lifted away from the a steep embankment. The car had to be recovered, and there aren’t many towing companies with the right gear for such a big job, so after a first failed attempt, Pepe’s Towing Service responded to the call.

As the traffic was heavy at the time, they arrived at the scene, on the Angeles Crest Highway, the following morning to assess the situation. Armed with a drone, they spotted the car around 400 feet down in the valley and came up with a plan to bring it back up, which meant hiking down and manually securing it to the cable. This was no walk in the park, as “there was tall prickly bushes everywhere and the slope was extreme, at one point, hitting a straight wall”, a company rep explained.
With the car secured to the 150-foot choker cable and the 250-foot winch line of the ‘Hulk’, a 50-ton rotator, they started pulling on the levers to bring it up. They then placed it on the trailer and the job was complete.
The entire ‘rescue’ operation was filmed using a head-cam and the aforementioned drone, and it is very impressive.
