This custom 1968 Plymouth Road Runner, outfitted with a dizzying array of aftermarket modifications, might just be the car that helps cure your coronavirus lockdown woes.
Plymouth built the Road Runner between 1968 and 1980 and AutotopiaLA had the opportunity to enjoy this truly epic example that features a monstrous 440 cubic-inch big-block V8 engine.
Popping the hood on this thing reveals an engine bay so clean that it almost beggars belief. Cars produced nowadays have engine bays dominated by electronics and cheap plastics. Not the case with this Plymouth.

While the engine has been comprehensively modified and now runs on 100 octane race fuel, it has a numbers matching original block, crankshaft, and cylinder heads. Among the modifications made include aftermarket rods and pistons and some valve train work and when running on a dyno, it pumped out 560 hp to the rear wheels, a seriously impressive figure for a naturally-aspirated engine of this age.
Elsewhere, the Road Runner has been outfitted with new Wilwood brakes front and rear and sits on a set of classic-looking wheels. There is also a straight-pipe exhaust (with no mufflers or catalytic converters) and tailpipes exiting out of the sides. The result is a car that sounds absolutely demonic and drastically unlike any modern performance cars.
As much as we love seeing crazy restomod builds with turbochargers and superchargers, it’s refreshing to see a classic Plymouth that remains naturally-aspirated. We’re sure it is an absolute thrill to drive.
