McLaren is a purveyor of mid-engined cars and only mid-engined cars, so much so that even when it decided to make a Grand Tourer, it placed the engine behind the passenger cell. But, what if McLaren was to make a front-engined car to rival, let’s say, the Ferrari 812 Superfast?
Intrigued by the idea of a front-engined Maccer, rendering artist J.B. Cars took the new McLaren 765LT and digitally (as in rendered) shifted the engine to the front, resulting in drastically different proportions but a car that still looks superb.
The rear-three quarter angle of the redesigned 765LT somewhat reminds us of the shape of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, an icon in the world of performance-focused, front-engined GT cars. With the McLaren 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 moved up front, the hood has been extended, meaning the cabin has been pushed back with the driver now sitting just in front of the rear axle.

This isn’t the first rendering we’ve come across depicting a McLaren like this. Last year, designer Rain Prisk imagined how the McLaren GT would look if converted to have its engine up the front and the rear altered into a Shooting Brake. We were rather fond of that rendering but think this front-engined 765LT looks even better.
Is there any chance McLaren will look to build such a car? It seems highly unlikely as the company is remaining committed to its mid-engined supercar family and has categorically ruled out an SUV. We have a suspicion a GT to rival the 812 Superfast would be just as unlikely to see the light of day as a McLaren SUV.
