After launching the new-gen 500 earlier this year, Fiat is now considering retiring the 500L minivan and 500X SUV, which have been around since 2012 and 2014 respectively, and are based on the same platform as the Jeep Renegade.
The reshuffle plan will not leave them without a more spacious alternative to the popular supermini, according to the company’s chief, Olivier Francois, who spoke with AutoExpress. According to Francois, the two models could be succeeded by a single model, and it could be dubbed the 500XL.

“We need to think of the next generation with the same approach to the consumer that makes a lot of sense in an all-electric version, with a body that is obviously more relevant and in fashion”, said Francois. “We’re thinking maybe a blend of the X and L is the way ahead, at the end of the day. But it is not for the near future – and when I say near, I mean not by the end of this year, for sure.”
In fewer words, this means that the successor of the 500X and 500L will be a crossover of some sort, featuring a high ground clearance and plenty of space inside. Word on the street is that it will sport a front end inspired by the 2020 500 in an attempt to tie it to the electric subcompact hatchback. We wouldn’t be surprised if the two will share most of their technical features.
On a related note, Fiat is also planning a bigger crossover, which would take on the Nissan Qashqai & co. It could be part of the next-gen Tipo family, although it’s still unknown whether it will launch alongside the regular body styles of the compact model, which might include a jacked-up estate variant to go after the Kia XCeed, or if it will retire the Tipo lineup completely.
Let’s not forget that Fiat has also approved another model for production, which was previewed by the electric Centoventi Concept at last year’s Geneva Motor Show.
