Anyone with a $200,000 car budget is not only spoiled for choice, but probably has a few ideas as to what their next ride should be. And within this price range, there are quite a few new head-turning vehicles, as well as a many classics, like this Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG.
What’s this E60 AMG you’re talking about?
Most are probably aware of the W124-series Mercedes-Benz 500E that was renamed to E500 after the German brand changed its naming policy in 1993. Offered from 1990 to 1995, the 500E / E500 was developed in part and hand-built by Porsche in Stuttgart boasting a naturally-aspirated 326 PS (322 hp) 5.0-liter V8 sourced from the 500 SL (R129). Dubbed the “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” by the press at the time, it did the 0-100km/h (62mph) in 6.1 seconds and had a a 161.6 mph (260 km/h) top speed.
But few know that Mercedes built a limited run of around 100 to 150 examples of a special edition version of the E500 from 1994 to 1995 named the E60 AMG. The main difference from the E500 upon which it was based is an enlarged V8 with a displacement of 6.0-liters producing 381 hp dropping the 0-100km/ (62mph) to 5.4 seconds. It also sported different 17-inch EVO-II wheels alongside an uprated sports suspension and exhaust system.
Full restored but very, very pricey
Made in late 1993 and with three previous owners, according to the listing by German dealer Biposto, the super sedan is in top notch condition. The vendor claims that it was meticulously restored with “a high six-figure amount invested in the vehicle during the last 10 years”. Since its restoration, it was driven only 1,430 miles (2,300 km). Unless Google’s translation has failed us, we deduce that the odometer was rolled over to zero, with no mention on how many miles have been put on the car in total since new.

Given the restoration and the fact that it was barely driven after that, it should still be capable of achieving the headline power and acceleration numbers advertised by Mercedes at the time, and which still hold on their own after so many years.
Finished in silver metallic on top of an interior bathed in black leather, the E60 is jammed with all sorts of features that were the bomb three decades ago. ABS, power steering, cruise control, air conditioning, electrically adjustable front seats, electrically operated mirrors, power windows, sunroof, radio and others are all included.
We left the bad news for last; a true automotive unicorn and one of the best cars for AMG fans, the classic E60has a buy-it-now price of €199,000, which equals to a little over $215,000 at today’s exchange rates.
