The BMW M8 Gran Coupe Competition and Porsche Taycan Turbo S represent the pinnacle of the luxury sports sedan segment, even if they’ve taken completely different paths to achieve their performance goals – one has a traditional internal combustion engine and the other, a zero-emissions electric powertrain.
At the end of the day, and despite having four doors, both of them are proper driver’s cars, with impressive straight-line performance and comfortable interiors, but which one is quicker at the track?
For this test, the two German saloons were set loose on the Lausitzring, a circuit located in northeast Germany, by AutoBildSportsCars, which put an experienced driver at the helm and proceeded to record the lap times.

Representing the ICE (internal combustion engine), the M8 Gran Coupe Competition is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine, with dual turbochargers, hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission. With a rear-biased all-wheel drive system on hand, the four-door model needs as little as 3.2 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill, and will keep accelerating up to 155 mph (250 km/h), or 190 mph (305 km/h) with the M Driver’s Package installed.
As far as power is concerned, a total of 616 HP (625 PS /460 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque are unleashed upon pushing the throttle to the floor. For the record, the regular M8 GC brings 592 HP (600 PS / 441 kW) to the party, for a 0-62 mph of 3.3 seconds and an identical top speed.
Representing the future here now, is the electric Taycan Turbo S, which with Overboost mode enabled, unleashes 750 HP (761 PS / 560 kW) and 774 lb-ft (1,050 Nm) on the tarmac. According to the manufacturer, 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) is deployed in just 2.6 seconds with the sports sedan topping out at 161 mph (260 km/h).
Now, which one you think was faster in the unofficial test performed on video? Only one way to find out.
