When it comes to really big SUVs, the Hummer H1 is probably one of the most iconic of them all. It’s the road-legal version of the famous Humvee military vehicle and was in production for 14 years, until 2006.
Launched for the civilian market in the first quarter of 1992, the H1 became a sensation due to the gargantuan size, rugged looks and the fact that it could pretty much tow a house if its driver wanted to.

Nowadays, even true off-roaders benefit from modern technology gear, several screens inside and extra sound deadening compared to the older iterations, but the H1 is spartan. You get seats, an HVAC system and a radio, which in this case was swapped for a more modern infotainment system hooked up to a reversing camera – and that’s pretty much it.
On the go, it’s anything but refined. The engine, which can be a 6.2-, 6.5- or 6.6-liter V8 diesel, or a 5.7-liter petrol V8 , makes more noise than the audio system even on relatively low speeds. Therefore, it’s likely that you won’t hear your phone ringing, or what the person riding shotgun is saying, because there’s also a huge console and armrest between the two front seats.
The H1 is an oddity, and we absolutely adore it for that, but is it worth spending between $40,000 and $100,000 on one? We’ll let you be the judge of that, so, after watching the video, feel free to have your say in the Comments section below.
