The updated 2020 Honda Civic Type R has all the makings of a superb hot hatch and to see just how good it really is, Throttle House hit the roads of Canada in a bright blue example. They also brought along an EP3-generation Civic Type R for good measure.
The FK8-generation Type R has been on the market for a good few years now but recently benefited from a series of updates and modifications for 2020.
Power continues to be provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder pumping out 306 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. This engine is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels through an advanced limited-slip differential.

A key update made to the 2020 model is an Active Sound Control system that funnels additional engine sounds into the cabin depending on the driving mode. Elsewhere, there are updated dampers that can adjust to the road surfaces ten times faster than before, while complementing the new dampers are stiffer rear bushings for improved grip.
Other modifications made include the fitment of a steering wheel clad in Alcantara and a new shifter with a restyled knob and shorter throws.
All of these parts combine to produce what is perhaps the best hot hatch on the market. However, is the current Type R as much fun to drive as the EP3 model? That’s what the entertaining review below sets out to discover, and while the two offer vastly different levels of performance, both are extremely entertaining to drive.
