The fact that VW wasn’t going to stick with just one body style for the eighth-gen Golf comes as a no surprise. However, there’s no denying the fact that the latest Golf was designed primarily as a five-door hatchback, which means the wagon variant will stick to being more of an acquired taste.

This rendering courtesy of Kolesa is clearly based on recently spotted Golf Variant Mk8 prototypes, as well as the aforementioned 5-door hatch. But is it accurate?

We’re leaning towards yes on that one, especially since we already know what the front half of the vehicle looks like. The rear end, however, is a tiny bit of a mystery, seen as how VW masked the actual tail lights before sending the prototypes out into the wild.

Still, could the light units remain unchanged between the hatchback and the Variant? Maybe, but it’s unlikely seen as how the two will undoubtedly feature different looking tailgates – just like with previous-generation Golfs.

In the Mk7 for example, the Variant’s tail lights were a tiny bit wider and a little less pointy. It was a subtle difference, but one that made sense given the design of their tailgates.

However, if you want to talk about similarities, rest assured that the two models will share the same dashboard design and layout, featuring a large infotainment display in the middle, right above the central air vents. The Variant will however offer more headroom for rear passengers, as well as a larger boot for people who fancy this as family-friendly alternative to the Golf 5-door.

As for its engine range, expect the usual 1.0-liter, 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter petrol units, as well as 2.0-liter TDI diesels, plus electrification and even a possible Golf R Variant down the road.
