Across seven generations since its launch in 1985, the Hyundai Sonata has never been available as a wagon.
However, since the launch of the eighth-generation model a year ago, rumors started circulating that the Korean automaker might be considering a more practical Sonata with a longer roof and rear hatch.
While there’s no official confirmation regarding that possibility, a Sonata wagon would certainly make sense in certain markets – especially Europe where they remain very popular – as a rival for the upcoming VW Arteon Shooting Brake. The trouble is Hyundai does not sell the 2020 Sonata sedan in Europe (with the exception of Russia), so the possibility of a Sonata wagon remains in the realm of wishful thinking at the moment.

The folks from Kolesa do not seem to mind that and have envisioned a wagon body style for the 2020 Sonata that doesn’t look half bad. These illustrations prove that Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ styling language can be easily tweaked to suit a Sonata wagon.
If it ever became a reality, the Hyundai Sonata wagon would be significantly bigger than the brand’s biggest estate model, the i40 Wagon, which used to be available until recently in Europe. While the i40 Wagon was 4,775-mm (188-in) long, the Sonata sedan measures 4,900 mm (192.9 in) from bumper to bumper. That means a hypothetical Sonata Wagon would be even longer and thus more practical for a family.
However, as SUVs are becoming more prevalent in most segments, the chances for Hyundai to build a Sonata wagon are next to nothing. It would certainly look good, don’t you think?
