Mercedes-Benz USA has just issued a recall notice for certain 2020 AMG GT vehicles with potentially faulty emergency call system communication modules (eCall).

According to the NHTSA, there are 149 potentially affected units, whose eCall module may be missing the wiring harness ground line, which in turn may cause the system to relay an inaccurate vehicle location.

If that were to happen, your inability to communicate with the call center may delay emergency responders, which is really bad in case of a crash. However, customers might be made aware of a malfunction via an SOS message in the instrument cluster.

After discovering this issue, Mercedes contacted the supplier, who investigated its production process and “found that the installation of the ground line had not been implemented appropriately in its production and test processes. Logistics documents were then analyzed to determine the potentially affected vehicles.”

“The supplier was able to make corrective actions in its production process as of October 23, 2019 to ensure the ground connection would be grounded as intended.”

The fix involves an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer reworking the wiring harness of the communication module on affected vehicles. With dealers already notified of this issue, it’s now time for the owners to learn about the voluntary recall campaign, which will take place starting June 20, 2020.

Owners are also instructed to contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

The recall documentation also specifies that the 149 vehicles in question are all 2-door versions of the Mercedes-AMG GT.
