Experienced truck drivers are hard to surprise and yet one Canadian trucker couldn’t believe his eyes as he witnessed a spectacular crash in Montreal on Wednesday evening.

Rob Nugent was minding his business driving his truck at around 6 p.m. exiting Highway 40 onto Highway 15 south when his dashcam caught a yellow motorcycle pass him and crash into an elevated jersey barrier.

The impact threw the biker over the side wall and onto the ground below, while the motorcycle continued to roll on the ramp for a while. According to Quebec provincial police Sgt. Claude Denis cited by CTV News, the rider suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash but that wasn’t the only reason. You see, the motorcyclist had no license or registration, which may or may not explain why he couldn’t position the bike properly to negotiate the turn.

Either way, the reckless rider probably owes his life to the trucker, who immediately stopped and flagged down a police officer. “If I didn’t stop, I knew that guy was probably not going to get found, at least right away,” the truck driver said. “I was just amazed. Usually if I see something like that, it’s far ahead or it’s on the other side of the road. For this to happen directly in front of me, it’s just whoa,” Nugent added.

Much like the rest of the world, Canada’s Quebec province has been seeing an increase in reports of excessive speed as restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic have significantly reduced traffic. According to CTV News, dozens of drivers have been caught going well over the speed limit in recent weeks. Many lost their licenses and had their vehicles seized for several days.
