Frank Stephenson is widely regarded as one of the most influential car designers of our time and knows more than a thing or two about what makes for a good-looking car. In this clip, we get to hear his thoughts about some of the more eye-catching concept cars to be recently released.
The first concept featured is the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR which was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show at the start of the year. It is one of the most striking concept cars of recent memory and is meant to showcase the connection between man, machine, and nature.
The exterior of the Vision AVTR is absolutely wild thanks to bulging front and rear wheel arches and complex lighting arrays across the front and rear fascias as well as the wheels. Stephenson is a big fan of the design, saying it is unlike anything he’s ever seen before and looks as though it has been “grown” as opposed to “produced.”

Another car featured in the video is the Audi AI:ME concept presented at the Shanghai Auto Show back in 2019. This concept isn’t quite as futuristic as the Vision AVTR but still stands out from existing Audi production models thanks to its sharp and taught design as well as the abundance of glass that give the cabin a very open and inviting vibe. The utilization of an electric powertrain also means interior space has been maximized.
While working for some huge players in the automotive industry, Stephenson played a crucial part in the design of vehicles like the Maserati MC12, Ferrari FXX, Ferrari F430, Fiat 500, Mini Cooper, and a host of McLarens including the 12C, P1, 675LT, 570S, and 720S.
