Tesla has narrowed down its search for the Cybertruck’s factory to Austin, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma according to the latest reports.
An unnamed source claims Tesla officials visited two sites in Tulsa last week but stressed that no final decision has been made.
SF Gate reports that the factory, which will apparently be the company’s largest in the United States, will also serve as a second site to build the Model Y in addition to handling production of the Cybertruck. Tesla has previously said it wants to build a factory in the center of the country and close to East Coast markets.
The mayors of Austin and Tulsa, Steve Adler and G.T. Bynum, declined to comment on whether their cities were selected as finalists. However, Bynum did jump online to further encourage Tesla to select his city, stating that “Tesla and Tulsa were forged in the same spirit” and that they were “both founded by pioneers who dreamt big and made it happen.” He added that “Tulsa is a city that doesn’t stifle entrepreneurs – we revere them.”

News of Tesla narrowing down its option for the Cybertruck plant comes roughly a week after chief executive Elon Musk threatened to move manufacturing and Tesla’s headquarters out of California due to a row regarding the county’s shelter-in-place orders. However, it seems highly unlikely this will eventuate as it would require Tesla to take its most important assembly plant offline for months while moving heavy equipment to another location.
