An eye-catching 1974 Pontiac Firebird is heading to a Mecum Auctions event on June 23-28 and will likely attract quite a lot of interest.

The second-generation Firebird was produced from 1970 to 1981 and sold exclusively as a two-door coupe. We love original Firebirds as much as the next person but this example has been extensively restored and modified and could very well be one of the finest we’ve come across for quite some time.

Visually, the body of the American classic has been altered to give it a more modern look while still retaining some of the original styling elements. The front end is particularly interesting thanks to the re-shaped headlights and grilles. Adorning the exterior is a lovely shade of battleship grey and the car sits on a set of black Foose Nitrous wheels.

Extensive performance modifications have been done. Most notable is the presence of an LS3 V8 engine out of a Corvette that’s been modified with forged pistons and now churns out 566 hp and 512 lb-ft (692 Nm) of torque. Mated to this engine is a Monster 4L70E transmission powering the rear wheels. Other key modifications include new upper and lower control arms, 3.08 gears, coilovers, Wilwood brakes, an aluminum radiator, custom headers, a 3-inch stainless steel exhaust and a Coleman Racing aluminum driveshaft.

The cabin looks to be a truly lovely place to sit thanks to Corbeau seats clad in black leather, a unique steering wheel, new gauges, and a host of other modern trimmings and touches.
